The Klesmorim’s art of playing instruments can be traced back to the middle ages and is ever since an indispensable part of Jewish community life, especially at marriage ceremonies and village festivities. Klesmer music has always been characteristic for its ability to absorb musical influences of any kind. Jewish, local folk and gypsy music form a homogenous whole. The Viennese Ensemble Klesmer (Leon Pollak from Poland, violin and vocals, Mario Koutev from Bulgaria, accordion and Michael Preuschl from Vienna, contrabass) is since its establishment in 1989 consequently making an effort to maintain Jewish folk music in a most authentic way.
